Our water treatment experts recommend soft water as the best skincare product.
Hard water found in a lot of regions of the UK, causes dryness of the skin, because hard water minerals stick to the skin after washing causing dryness and often eczema. When hard water minerals react with soap, the scum that this reaction creates stays not only on the surface of your bathtub and taps, but also on your skin and hair.
As a result, we use more of moisturises and creams after bathing in hard water, to avoid dry and itchy skin. However, using a lot of soap is not good for the skin either, as soap manufacturers add a lot of chemicals to soaps to combat the problems resulting from contact with hard water.
Sulfates, used in soaps and shampoos to produce lather and bubbles, such as SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) and SLES (sodium laureth sulfate) – irritate the skin, strip the skin of its natural oils and increase penetration of the skin’s surface.
Fragrances, used in soaps, are most often synthetic chemicals and cancer-causing toxins (like phthalates, used to make fragrances last longer). Long-term exposure to fragrances can negatively impact the central nervous system and trigger allergies, migraines and asthma symptoms.
Triclosan, which is the chemical most often found in antibacterial soap, have been found to actually promote the emergence and growth of bacteria resistant to antibiotic cleansers. It also creates a cancerogen called dioxin, which has a negative effect on the endocrine system and thyroid functions.
As a consequence of all this, our skin suffers from both the minerals in hard water and the soap chemicals.
Using softened water helps to eliminate these problems. Soft water leaves skin silky and clean, feeling like the moisturising cream has already been applied to it. It will also lead to less blockage of pores.
People who suffer from eczema and psoriasis find that soft water helps to alleviate the eczema symptoms and drastically reduce the dryness of the skin.
Babies who have more sensitive skin may also suffer from hard water and a lot of soap and detergents which are used to clean clothes and bedding in hard water. Therefore it is recommended to use softened water to bath young children.
