Anti-bacterial agent in our hygiene products confirmed harmful and linked to water contamination

Some states in the US have restricted the use of, or already banned, Triclosan - the antibacterial chemical used in soap products, toothpaste, shampoos and shower gels.

It has been confirmed that Triclosan is effectively contaminating our waterways, as it can not be removed from the wastewater infrastructure by the filters. As a result, it accumulates in lakes and rivers which we use for our drinking water supplies.

Triclosan is known to cause damage in freshwater plants and animals, and alter hormone regulation.

The Canadian government is also taking steps to limit usage of Triclosan in soap industry.

Solution? - Try to find products which do not contain Triclosan, such as Procter & Gamble's Crest toothpaste, advertising that it is "Triclosan-free".
